Why is the sky blue?

The sky appears blue because of a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it collides with the molecules of air, including oxygen and nitrogen, which are much smaller than the wavelength of visible light. This interaction causes the light to scatter in all directions.

Blue light has a shorter wavelength and higher frequency than the other colors in the visible spectrum, such as red and yellow. This means that blue light is scattered more easily than other colors by the molecules in the air. As a result, when we look up at the sky, we see a higher concentration of blue light scattered in all directions, giving the sky its blue appearance.

At sunrise and sunset, when the sun is closer to the horizon, the light has to pass through more of the Earth’s atmosphere to reach us. This causes the blue light to scatter even more, leaving only the warmer colors like red and yellow to reach our eyes, resulting in the colorful sky we often see during these times.
